Noein: Episode 14 Summary and Afterthoughts

Tobi and Atori stay in the spare room at the Haruka's house under the guise of a non-profit organization studying birds. There, Tobi observes the increasing instability forming in the timespace.

Haruka finds herself in a dimensional loop, wherein she repeatedly witnesses a quarrel between her parents prior to their divorce. Each time the event repeats, something different happens, and the animosity between her parents gets worse. Haruka becomes intent on finding a past where her parents were never separated; but the Wanderer tells her that the timeline she seeks does not connect with hers and that her past cannot be changed.

Miyuki, back in her younger days, with what is supposed to be a broken phone. Haruka only realizes much later that she herself caused the phone in her mother's past to ring.

An antique telephone that has not worked since the time of Haruka's great-grandfather starts ringing. Haruka picks up the receiever and hears her father's voice on the other end, but he doesn't recognize her and quickly hangs up. The next time it rings, she hears a young Miyuki Kaminogi, followed by a second voice - another Haruka speaking from a different timespace, beseeching versions of herself to support Yuu when he is depressed.

Yuu recalls times he and Haruka spent as young children, and finally understands how much she has been endeared to him.

The Wanderer tells Haruka that her own situation will not change, even if she manages to find an alternate past.

Karasu learns from Tobi that the instabilities in Haruka's timespace are similar to those that occurred just before their own timespace La Cryma was invaded.

An unknown entity makes its first appearance. Is it friend or foe?

Afterthoughts

Considering that the Dragon Knights are often referred to as "birds", and Karasu, Atori, and Tobi are the ones being observed, Tobi's statement about bird watching is a nice little twist of humorous irony.

This episode is one example of how Noein's loose extrapolations on time travel theories make for some interesting situations. Using the old broken phone as a link between past events across different timespaces is a great concept.

Yuu is being his usual illogically temperamental and depressive self. Hopefully, the realization that he has great reason to become strong and to protect Haruka will keep him from being such a whiny, angry brat in future episodes.

We are given a brief glimpse of a seahorse-like creature or robot near the end of the episode, but there are few clews as to what it could be other than another entity from Shangri La.
