Have you ever sat down to write about something that you thought was already laid out in your mind, but then it takes so much longer and turns into something quite, if not completely, different? This is one of those times for me.
It's still very rough, but I can't seem to get anywhere else with it this evening. Nonethess, I feel the need to share, so here it is. It was much longer than it is now. I cut out much of it as it sounded overly pretentious and rather 'emo' (not that I haven't written in such a manner before). I'll probably file this away, forget about it, and end up rewriting it in a year or two. In the meantime, I hope you all enjoy this piece. ^o^
untitled (drafted 11 24 2009)
I wish I could reach out to you
Travel beyond this sea of lights
Far across these beeping flashing worlds
But millions of miles of cable and wire
do nothing to help the fact that
I am stranded
Imagining myself somewhere else
Imagining myself someone else
Instead of being stuck at this desk
Instead of just another poet
I wish I could leave behind
This cluttered cage of concrete and glass
The clatter of dancing tapping fingertips
Just for a while be free
For just a moment be
Someone greater than the shell of a man
who wishes he had some wisdom to share
Someone other than the cutout face
of somebody else pretending to be me
I wish I could put my hand on your shoulder
and say something to ease your worries
Or do something silly to bring a smile to your face
A real smile that says
Thank you
Instead of a fake teeth-baring gleam
that silently screams
You don't know me well enough to say that
Just go away and stop trying to be funny
Leave me alone
You can't help me
I wish I could
But I am nothing more than just another poet
Tossing bottled messages into a sea of lights
Hoping that they reach the shores
of your beeping flashing world

Odd how writing, which attempts to be a form of communication, often ends up achieving the opposite: creating a sense of alienation. Sometimes those words create a wall between oneself and the world.
ReplyDelete"An avid reader and writer", a seasoned poet. I'm stuck with you. I'll read more.
ReplyDeleteThis is a revisit. I like your poetry and you're interesting. Your profile says so.
ReplyDelete@ LitMalic: Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed reading my posts. I look forward to more of your poetry, too.
ReplyDelete@ nothing profound: I agree. That's quite common, especially in poetry. Though I like to think I've branched out a little more from all the "brood, mope, oh woe is I, so dark, is the world" type of themes, harnessing melancholy and dark imagery is somewhat easier and produces a more dramatic effect.
